SQUATS AND RESTING?! HOW LONG IS GOOD ENOUGH TO WAIT?! The most beneficial rest interval for maximum squat strength should be long enough to permit a FULL RECOVERY of the neuromuscular system, roughly about 3-5 minutes. A relationship between ample rest and maximal PAP was recently studied at the University of Sao Paulo. The study called for 11 men each with a significant amount of previous training to do max set of squats followed by a varying in rest periods from 1-7 minutes. They then did a set of squats using 50 percent of their one rep max. The researchers measured the power generated in the 50 percent one-rep max set to see if PAP could increase power output. The results showed that PAP did increase power production the longer the subjects rested. SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?!?!? Take longer resting periods. You WILL lift stronger and longer. SUPER SET your squats or even incorporate a three or four exercise pattern so that you can rest longer if the superset is too short.
