SRINAGAR: A group of more than 50 Sumo drivers continue to forcibly occupy prime land, worth over Rs 100 crore, belonging to Srinagar Development Authority (SDA), at a stone’s throw away from Deputy Chief Minister’s official residence. Official sources said the taxi drivers had earlier occupied a playing field near Tourist Reception Centre (TRC) in the Kashmir capital. Besides hundreds of vehicles are picking and dropping passengers on busy roads with traffic police personnel not taking any action. Top sources in the government say the owners of the land near Sangarmal Shopping Complex, SDA, is not keen to evacuate the land. “We are ready to provide them every help, but to lead the action is their job,” a top official told Media. “This is not the first land grabbing incident. In Batmalloo area a huge measure of land has been grabbed, why didn’t the SDA take action.” The incident has caused outrage in the Kashmir capital Srinagar. The Valley Citizen Council (VCC) general secretary Imdad Saqi has expressed concern over the activities of land mafia and Taxi drivers in the city.
