SRINAGAR: With the holy fasting month of Ramzan - TopicsExpress

SRINAGAR: With the holy fasting month of Ramzan commencing tomorrow, prices of all essential commodities has gone up in the Kashmir Valley. However, a milk company has announced Rs 2 discount a litre for the fasting month. People from many areas alleged that the ration depots of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution (CA&PD) are without ration, particularly sugar and wheat flour for the past few months. Despite claiming that divisional and district administrations in the Valley, including Srinagar, have been geared up field staff to check the prices of essential commodities, especially during the fasting month, the situation on the ground was totally different. Valley Citizen Council (VCC) general secretary Imdad Saqi alleged that some shopkeepers were being fined here and there to give an impression that market checking was going on which actually has no impact on the ground. Meat was being sold at Rs 340 to 360 a kg against the government approved rate of just Rs 298. Similarly, the chicken is sold at Rs 120 to Rs 130 a kg while an egg costs Rs 4. During this period, the chickens were being sold at Rs 60 to Rs 75 a kg while a dozen of eggs cost Rs 30 to Rs 34, recalled Mohammad Ashraf, a resident of uptown. More than 6,000 sheep and goats and about 40,000 chickens were being consumed daily, majority of which were being imported from different parts of the country, particularly from northern states. The butchers were selling meat at higher rates openly without any check.
