ST. BRENDAN’S BASKETBALL CLUB RESULTS FROM LAST WEEK St. Brendan’s U-14 Div 1 – Wednesday 30th October A young but committed St. Ann’s side playing their first game of the season provided a good test for the St. Brendans team fresh from the previous week’s glorious victory over a much-fancied KCYMS team. While the game was a somewhat one-sided affair, St. Ann’s fought bravely throughout and never gave up. The first quarter ended 18-7 with David McCarthy scoring a massive fourteen of St. Brendan’s points. John O’Rourke for St. Ann’s gave a skillful performance scoring all of his team’s seven points. The second quarter saw Philip Corkery dominate the scoreboard chalking up over half St. Brendans points in the period, with Kevin O’Connor scoring a lovely couple of baskets also. Shane Burke and Shane Callaghan battled to keep St. Ann’s in touch. Jaylord Tabios started the third quarter with a beautiful basket followed by two out of two free throws with more scores to follow from David McCarthy, Philip Corkery and young James Fernane. Shane Burke scored 4 points for St. Ann’s but at this stage the contest was over. The final quarter saw Jason Moloney causing havoc for St. Ann’s scoring 6 from his hard work under the boards and Kevin O’Connor added another 4. Ahmed Sahal contributed a beautiful basket from outside the key. Lawrence Guardiano shot another followed by St. Brendan’s stalwarts Gerard Tansley and Brian Lonergan to bring St. Brendans to a grand total of 73 points at the whistle against the valiant young St. Ann’s 28. Mention must also be made of the sterling defensive display by St. Brendans with superb rebounding by David McCarthy 19, Jason Moloney & Domnick Lyons 9 each, Jaylord Tabios and James Fernane 5 each. Players and Scorers: David McCarthy, 23; Philip Corkery, 13; Jason Moloney, 8; Kevin O’Connor & Jaylord Tabios, 6; Gerard Tansley & Lawrence Guardiano, 4; James Fernane, 3; Dominic Craig, Brian Lonergan and Ahmed Sahal, 2; Domnick Lyons. St. Brendan’s U-18 Div 1 – Tuesday 29th October St Brendans took on local rival Tralee Imperials in a Division 1 clash and it was Imperials that started brightly, pressing hard on offence and opening the scoring with a three pointer. Brendan’s struggled to match the Imperials offence and were forced into fouling and conceded a number of free shots that were converted. Imperials were up by a point with five minutes to go in the first quarter but St. Brendans began to open up and settled into a scoring pattern making two three pointers in a row. Brendans assumed control collecting numerous rebounds and putting points on the scoreboard and at the end of the first quarter they lead 18-10. Brendans started the second quarter as they had finished the first getting the opening score and putting pressure on the Imperials defence. Imperials found it hard to break through Brendans defence with most of their shots off target. With Brendan’s again dominating the rebound exchanges they took their lead to 36-14 at half-time. Brendans began the third quarter by allowing Imperials to put points on the scoreboard but they still maintained a decent lead at of 40-17. Brendan’s kept pressuring both on offence and defence but found scores hard to come by. At the end of the third quarter they led 44-27. However in the final quarter Brendan’s assumed complete control of the match and ran out comfortable winners by 61-38. Top scorers for Brendan’s were Gary Furnane with 19, Mike O’Donnell with 19 and Rory Doyle with 7. St. Brendan’s Blitz – Monday 28th October While most people were still tucked in their beds enjoying a Bank Holiday Monday sleep-in St. Brendans intrepid under 10s and 11s were readying themselves for action in Moyderwell Gym for the first All-Brendan’s blitz of the year. Five teams were formed and played off in a round-robin format. It was a great experience of real game atmosphere for these determined youngsters, complete with clock, referees and an enthusiastic crowd. There were significant signs of upcoming talent in the ranks and Kieran ‘Star’ Donaghy and Roscoe Patterson even dropped in to see the boys who will be stepping into their shoes in 2020 or thereabouts. There was a genuine cup-tie atmosphere for the game with two teams made up of Brendans U12s and U14Bs. What this age group lacked in numbers they made up in skill, hustle, and teamwork. Both teams gave their all in an end-to-end game with the game ebbing and flowing to the end. Fergal O’Sullivan’s team hung on to win by one point in a nail-biting finish and irrespective of the score all players involved can be proud of the skill and heart they displayed on the day. The afternoon highlight saw no less than 6 talent-filled teams made up of U14As and U16s play off a series of scintillating games filled with ball-handling master classes, end-to-end action, buzzer beating shots and blocks and amazing teamwork to the delight of their proud parents and coaches. Following the success of this event we hope to repeat it again in the near future. Thanks to organiser Pa Carey, referees Charles O’Sullivan and Sharon Roche (sorry we’ll ensure you get coffee and a bun next time), coaches of the under-age teams and u18s helpers, Nathan Roche, Paudie Murphy and Rhys Barry. Special thanks to all the parents who got up early on a Bank Holiday Monday to ensure the event was a roaring success.
