ST. CROIX HISTORICAL TOUR DAY 22 We are now entering Judiths Fancy one of the most exclusive residences on the island. Here is “Cabo de Flechas,” the point of arrows as Christopher Columbus called it because of the Indians attack. This ocean body is where Christopher Columbus landed on Salt River. He was met with arrows possibly coming from right where we are standing. Archaeologists have found Petroglyphs on rock formations, artifacts from Indian civilization that archaeologists have recovered, and remnants of a court where the Indians would play their ball games. This is the Caribbean Sea that leads to Puerto Rico and Culebra to our west, keep going in that direction and you will find Hispaniola which is Haiti and Santo Domingo, Cuba and Jamaica under it to the south. Vieques is to our direct north west, St. Thomas is 40 miles to the North, with Tortola and the British Virgin Islands to the north east curving around going east, then south, is: Anegada, Saba, St. Maarten, Anguilla, St. Kitts/Nevis, Antigua, Guadeloupe, Dominica, Martinique, St. Lucia, Grenadines, St. Vincent, Trinidad and Tobago then Venezuela; South America, Columbia, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Mexico and up to America, Florida is right about here 1,300 miles away. By the way next to Puerto Rico there is the Puerto Rico Trench which is 30,180 feet and crevices that reach 35,000 feet deep and is the third deepest body of water in the world next to the Bearing Straight in the pacific connecting the Bearing Sea and the Tonga Trench. We actually sit on a major fault line where we experience tremors all the time and can come face to face with a severe earthquake as this is an area of instability through constant movement. The deep depths are also a real cause for concern and everyone should have a life vest in their home for each person and also in their cars for each passenger. The last severe earthquake was in 1867 and St. Thomas felt the brunt of that 25 foot tidal wave, but in these events we can never be sure of what to expect. Preparation is key.
