ST. MARTIN DE PORRES NEWS * St. Martin bids farewell to Pastor and welcomes Acting Pastor. The church community was delighted at the appointment of Bishop Burchell McPherson to the Diocese of Montego Bay, though sorry to lose him. Bishop Burchell had done a lot to mobilize the parish, including the music ministry, and his friends from Florida had helped with a very successful eye clinic and education support. A special function was held at the church in his honour. The parish has been privileged to have Archbishop Emeritus Don Reece as Acting Pastor. His Grace has been faithfully ministering to the parish from even before his appointment, and provides a fine example of Christian faith and guidance. * Fund-raising Fish-Fry a Success. At the end of May, a fish-fry was held to help defray expenses of the parish. It was well-supported and raised over $200,000 towards the increasing shortfall between the cost of operating the parish and the collections received. All thanks to Sr. Lupe who was the driving force behind the venture. * Women’s League starts Prayer Evening. The St. Martin de Porres women initiated a monthly prayer meeting on the third Tuesday of each month at 6p.m. at the church, starting in July. The Prayer Evening is open to all, not just the League members. * Men’s Fellowship paints church. The Men’s Fellowship cleaned and painted the external walls of the church, and will continue to paint other sections of the compound and the Convent . * Youth Group members attend Summer Camp. Ten members of the Youth Group attended a week-long Summer Camp in Manchester arranged by Fr. Agustin. They thoroughly enjoyed the experience and made friends with youths from the Holy Trinity Cathedral parish, some of whom subsequently attended Sunday Mass at St. Martin’s. * Back-to-school Mass held. A Mass was held on Sunday, Sept. 8 for the start of the school year. A large number of students came forward for a special blessing. * Education assistance provided from Florida friends. 31 students from the church community benefitted from back-to-school book vouchers or tuition help thanks to the generosity of friends from Naples, Florida, who also had given assistance last year. * St. Vincent de Paul benefits from Florida friends too. The St. Vincent de Paul Chapter received J$50,000 in support of its outreach programme from our friends in Florida. The Chapter runs a weekly soup kitchen as well as distributes over 50 food packages each month to needy cases in the community. Unfortunately, the roof of the kitchen has deteriorated and is in need of repairs, so the Chapter is seeking help to fix it before the rainy season is fully here.
