STAND-UP FOR YOURSELF was an un-stop-able read; funny, naked and gripping dont come near describing it, though it was all of these and more. Shelley Bridgmans book is testimony to unparalleled Courage, Triumph and Inspiration. Its beyond what most of us possess, ever have to cultivate or express. What she shares can only be a taste of the very real suffering and lessons shes gleaned, yet it was more than enough to leave me feeling humbled and for her willingness to share, so honestly, my absolute respect. Born into a boys body, only feeling as if she was a girl...her early life was destined to be a ferocious battle of self loathing and denial. Where she takes us, her journey, to where and who she is today...leaves the reader in no doubt as to what a special individual she is and the enormity of her Calling. To live in a state of entrapment is one of humanities most untenable challenges. To endure, and even mature, because if it, and then be the catalyst to springing the chains of ones trap (for others too) is therefore one of our greatest feats. Such accomplishments begin to introduce to you The Sheroe who is Shelley Bridgman. On a lighter note, I loved the quotes (many are my favourites), the comedy anecdotes and the travel stories. Of all, the one that most viscerally remains is of Shelley sleeping in the rainforest...the surprising total silence of the night and the deafening cacophany of the morning chorus. She had me want to rush to my nearest rainforest, halfway across the world! As someone who knows Shelley, l can honestly say she is one of the most special women lve had the privelege of meeting in recent years. lts my deep desire that this book positions her as the authority and expert she is on Transgender Issues. May it also bring Shelley beautyfull opportunities, abundance and love much deserved. Love Nyali
