STARLIGHT ANGELS S.A.S.S. UPDATE 09/14/2014 *Dedicated in Loving Memory of Jerry Metcalf* ***************************************************************************** (Next SASS ... September 21st) On September 14th, Team Metatron (Ramona, Nellene, Fran and Jerri) came together for our thirty-sixth (36th) SASS!!! Our dear Fran could not make it this day, but joined us the day before and shared in the magic of making the vegetable soup.(more about that in thoughts and reflections) 40 Full Meals *Roasted pork or beef sandwich, Homemade vegetable soup (*extra yummy!!! Thank you, Jerry!), homemade cornbread, homemade apple strudel/cobbler dessert, Banana, Cold Water 40 Hygiene Kits (includes various combinations of the following): socks, razors, shampoo, conditioner, soap, combs, q-tips, band aids, kleenex, tooth brush, tooth paste, etc. Thoughts and Reflections.... Making the Soup: .... One of Starlight Angels most avid supporters was Jerry Metcalf (Nellenes husband), who passed on earlier this year. With whatever was needed, Jerry was always there... with smiles and jokes... and just a genuine gentle loving spirit. When Nellene found that Jerry had left a large stash of canned vegetables, she thought they could be used in a wonderful pot (or, in this case... POTS) of vegetable soup. So, we came together to make soup. But, it turned out to be more than just a pot of vegetable soup. The whole experience of deciding on which vegetables to use, which not to use... what spices/herbs to put in... how much is enough... does it need more salt... all of these were addressed with more than set of hands and opinions. It was a collaboration of Love. In the end, the vegetable soup was one of the most delicious (if not THE most delicious) soup Ive had in a long, long time! Many thanks to you, my Starlight Angels friends... and my friend, Jerry... for all that you gave to us while you were with us, and all that you continue to give.... This is how we cook all of the Starlight Angels Sunday Share (SASS) meals... with intentions of Love in every morsel. As so beautifully stated by Rumi.... youtube/watch?v=MjhMbjpCktc I gain strength from little Ali every Sunday. When we pull into the parking area near her, I see her tiny figure hobbling back and forth, a stack of papers in one hand, her cane in the other... her worn hat on her head. She weights all of... nothing. I make a point of crossing the street to deliver her meal, just so I can get a hug. Sometimes, shes so busy that I can only get a quick hug, but truth be told... she has no idea how she inspires me. I look forward to seeing her every Sunday. There are so many others that we meet every Sunday that share so many lessons with me. They become my teachers... I can see what it means to be strong in the face of adversity, fearless, loving of strangers, compassionate, and giving when there is nothing... or very little to give. Blessings to ALL who allow me to experience the gift of giving... and teaching me how to receive in return. **Receiving is not always material in nature.** Keeping our eyes open to new (or re-newed) opportunities: At least 36 times we have driven down Florida Ave. and passed The Home Depot. You cant miss it... Its huge! We initially noticed about 4 men (day workers) at the corner. We decided to finish our last two stops and head back to this corner if we had any meals left. Well, we did have a few meals left. However, when we came back and actually pulled into the parking area, there were many more than just four. With the last meal and cold water in my hands, I saw several waiting and looking at me. I didnt know what to do. But, my eyes kept coming back to a man who was very quiet in the background. He was just waiting... looking. I stepped over to him and asked him if he would accept our meal. He closed his eyes and said, Gracias. So, once again... a repeat lesson from before... As in The Four Agreements (by Miguel Ruix)... I was reminded to Always do your best... and just as before, I was prompted to leave the rest in Gods hands. We got back in the car and headed back out to the street. While we we were passing by, we saw everyone opening up their meals and just digging in... all, except for one man. This was the man I gave the last meal to. It was like slow motion as we passed by. He was kneeling on one knee, the bag on the ground in front of him, his hands clasped together, his eyes closed, his face looking up to the sky. I could see him mouthing words. It touched my heart... and we were all in tears from that experience. A HUGE THANK YOU to all who support Starlight Angels in EVERY form!!!
