STATE DATA BOOK 2013 NOW AVAILABLE ON DBEDT WEBSITE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 14, 2014 HONOLULU - The Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (DBEDT) today released the 2013 edition of the State of Hawaii Data Book. The resource is available on the DBEDT website at dbedt.hawaii.gov/economic/databook/ and may be downloaded in whole or in part as either PDF or Excel files. The state’s Data Book is the most comprehensive statistical book about Hawaii in a single compilation. With more than 800 data tables, it covers a broad range of statistical information in areas such as population, education, labor, energy, business enterprises, government, tourism and transportation. “The Hawaii State Data Book is the most popular product on the DBEDT website, generating an average of 60 page views a day,” said DBEDT Director Richard C. Lim. “It has been produced consistently for 46 years.” “The information in the book is valuable for people who want to do business in Hawaii or want to know Hawaii,” said State Economist Eugene Tian. “Here in the Research and Economic Analysis Division, we update data whenever it becomes available. We also keep historical series of the data as a supplemental product on DBEDT website.” Some of the unique and interesting data in this newest edition show that: · There were 4,737 attorneys with active licenses in Hawaii as of March 2013. (Table 4.14) · Total number of registered nurses licensed in Hawaii was 22,058 in 2013, which was a 12.3 percent increase from 2012. (Table 2.36) · In 2014, there were almost 7,000 real estate salespersons with active licenses in Hawaii, while about 4,500 more had inactive licenses. (Table 21.29) · In 2013, the median age of felons in Hawaii was 40.6 years. (Table 4.20) · There were 67 threatened and endangered species in Hawaii in 2013. (Table 5.61) · Hawaii Scholastic Assessment Test SAT scores made gains in each category math, reading and writing last year, while the national average remained the same. (Table 3.20) · Hawaii State Library system circulated more than 45,000 electronic media than the previous year and is now circulating more than three times as much electronic media as compared to five years ago. (Table 3.28) · In 2013, an average of 187,062 individuals monthly benefitted from the Food Stamp Program, an all-time record high. (Table 11.04) · As of 2013, Oahu had 88.53 miles of freeway and 1,571.69 mile of paved streets. (Table 18.02) · Although the number of driver’s licenses in force has been decreasing since 2011, the number of registered motor vehicles in 2013 are at an all-time high at 1,341,152. (Tables 18.06 and 18.15) · According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 325,000 workers in Hawaii were paid at hourly rates in 2013, which was down from 331,000 workers in 2012.
