STATEMENT 15: THE TRUTH ABOUT THE BAI-KAI DEVELOPMENT DATE: AUGUST 8 2014 Most of us will remember the devastation caused by the category 4 Cyclone Evan in December 2012. For many of us in the west the damage was significant and because of the lack of resources, repairs took a long time to conclude as the clean-up itself took many weeks. There was no power for weeks. And the villages of Vitogo and Naviyago had their share of damage and were in need of assistance from government as many others did. However, as the attached internal memo reads, the promised rehabilitation for Vitogo and Naviyago was withdrawn because the Tui Vitogo would not promise support for the Bainimarama regime in exchange for materials to rebuild the damaged homes. The materials were removed on the orders of Frank Bainimarama and the attached memo supports this. This copy of the internal memorandum is specific prove that the so called development provided by the Bainimarama government was based on ‘black mail’. Communities who agreed to support the regime, received development while those who refused, like the Tui Vitogo were shut out. And as the date of the internal memorandum shows this merciless and mean spirited act against the people of Vitogo and Naviyago was put into effect at the height of the people’s recovery from the devastation. So much for the humanitarian, compassionate and caring government of Bai-Kai at the time of peoples suffering.
