STATEMENT BY EAMONN MALONEY TD 11th. JULY 2013 CHARITY REGULATION IS LONG OVERDUE The establishment of a Charities Regulatory Authority by the Minister for Justice, Alan Shatter TD has been welcomed by Eamonn Maloney TD. "With over 8,000 charities, Ireland has waited a long time for regulation other than the basic regulation provided by the Revenue Commissioners. While most charities have been exemplary in the conduct of their affairs, some have acted as secret societies with questionable methods of operation. It is a fact that charities have operated in this state which were subsequently discovered, more by accident than design, to be scams and illegal enterprises." "The very generous Irish public need something better than that. It is only right and proper that all charities explain clearly how they spend their funds. They must be made to conduct their affairs with transparency and be accountable by providing detailed information about their activities to their donors and the public. I have long held the view that because of the very generous tax benefits given to charities by the taxpayer, there should be scrupulous public scrutiny of this sector of the economy. A Charity Regulator is long overdue."
