STATEMENT [No 20 /2013] [Tuesday Sept 3, 2013] The UFDF today welcomed the recent announcement by the Methodist Church that it would remain neutral and not side politically with any group. The UFDF said this was a welcomed move that should be practiced by all religious groups, saying that this neutrality should extend to not showing support or favor to any government that has not received the mandate of the people through free and fair elections. The UFDF today welcomed the recent announcement by the Methodist Church that it would remain neutral and not side politically with any group. The UFDF said this was a welcomed move that should be practiced by all religious groups, saying that this neutrality should extend to not showing support or favor to any government that has not received the mandate of the people through free and fair elections. The UFDF said all religious organizations had a moral and religious obligation to defend the rights of all the citizens of Fiji, especially in times of crisis to ensure that their rights to life, dignity, free speech, assembly, association, worship as well as workers rights to a fair wage and conditions. Religious organizations and indeed all socially responsible organizations have a moral responsibility to all the people to bring whatever pressure is necessary to bear on the government of the day and to hold them to account for all their actions and decisions, especially where citizen’s rights have been abused and the abusers hide behind the promise of immunity. The UFDF said for too long this area of responsibility has been left to the political parties to shoulder, when in fact it is the individual and collective responsibility of every citizen in Fiji to ‘protect and support each other’ especially in times of crisis when a minority among us commit the greatest crime of all against the people – treason, then use the threat of force to maintain control of the country while hiding behind immunity to cover up for their despicable abuses of our people’s rights. This is where the churches need to focus their attention and protect their congregation and the people from ongoing abuse by the usurpers of our democracy. Authorized By UFDF
