STATEMENT ON ARRANGEMENTS FOR THE MEMORIAL AND FUNERAL SERVICE OF THE THREE ASSASINATED NUMSA SHOPSTEWARDS 13 August 2014 The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) special National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Monday 11 August 2014, discussed the brutal slaying of our three Shopstewards, in Isithebe, KwaZulu-Natal, namely Local Secretary Njabulo Dube, Deputy Secretary Sibonelo “John-John” Ntuli and Ntobeko Maphumulo. The NEC resolved that these fallen heroes deserve a proper national send-off. We are overwhelmed by the messages of condolences and support from abroad and in our own country, decrying the dastardly act of assassination ahead of the successful and groundbreaking International Symposium of Left Parties and Movements. The two assassinated Shopstewards comrades Dube and Ntuli were supposed to be in attendance. Their absence from the Symposium was greatly felt by delegates, particularly their Mbuyiselo Ngwenda Brigade colleagues. We have been working closely with the families of the three killed Shopstewards, our Local, Regional and national leadership would be carrying out the wishes of the families and NEC, to conduct a national funeral for the departed heroes. The forces of darkness that carried out this cowardly act shall have to be brought to book and face the full might of the law. Numsa and families of the assassinated Shopstewards shall not rest until justice is done. The arrangements for the national funeral and send-off of our three Shopstewards are now at an advanced stage. We therefore wish to advice of the following arrangements: The Memorial Service will be held at Sibusisiwe Hall, Sundumbili, Mandeni, KwaZulu-Natal, at 15h00pm, on Friday 15 August 2014. Speakers at the Memorial Service will include Numsa General Secretary Irvin Jim, local and regional leaders of Numsa. The Funeral Service will be held at Mandeni Sport Ground; at 8h00am, on Saturday 16 August 2014. The Funeral Service will open with the singing of Nkosi Sikelela iAfrika, prayers and scripture readings. Speakers will include members of the three families; Numsa President Comrade Andrew Chirwa will present the funeral oration. The service will close with the reading of wreaths and a sermon by Reverend. The Funeral Service of our killed Shopstewards will be attended by thousands of Numsa members; community members; leaders from COSATU’s affiliated unions and fraternal organisations. Members of the media are hereby invited to attend and report on the main Funeral Service. No media accreditation will be necessary.
