STATOIL: Our elected government will NOT protect us or the environment from Statoil. Our elected Government WILL call out the Navy and the Police to protect Statoil from us when we protest. Our elected Northland Regional Council supports the Government, not us. Our elected Far North District Council supports the Government, not us. This Council has developed a position paper on mineral, oil and gas extraction without consulting us. It is considering making a submission on the 2015 Block Offer for permits to explore for oil off our coast, without any mention of consulting us. They have the law on their side, and with that comes the power to stop us. If we want to stop this assault on us and our environment, we have to act in defiance of the law. WE will then be the criminals, not Statoil. If we succeed against Statoil, next year there will be another oil company sailing into our waters. And the year after that, another one. And the year after that, still more. If we want to stop oil exploration and extraction off our coast, we have to change the law. The EEZ has to become an oil-free zone. If that sounds too hard, then remember this: In March 1976 over 20 anti nuclear and environmental groups, including Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth, met in Wellington and formed a loose coalition called the Campaign for Non-Nuclear Futures (CNNF). The coalitions mandate was to oppose the introduction of nuclear power and to promote renewable energy alternatives such as wind, wave, solar and geothermal power. They launched Campaign Half Million. CNNF embarked on a national education exercise producing the largest petition against nuclear power in New Zealands history with 333,087 signatures by October 1976. This represented over 10% of the countrys total population of 3 million. Under the New Zealand Nuclear Free Zone, Disarmament, and Arms Control Act 1987[2][31] territorial sea and land of New Zealand became nuclear free zones. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealands_nuclear-free_zone
