STEAM WINDER OPEN DAY AT THE HETTY SNOW. FREE ENTRY! Dear friends, I would like to bring to your attention an opportunity for you to see the Hetty steam-winder engine, in action (!), this coming Saturday 27th September from 10am onwards. Hetty is located in Trehafod, opposite Barry Sidings park, I will post a link to a google map in this post. All of you will have passed by the engine but many may be unware of its existence. This is a rare opportunity to see this impressive mechanical wonder in all her glory. We have hired ourselves a large air compressor (about the size of a mini bus), and will be using her to drive the engine in a simulated wind throughout the day. This is first time she has run in two years and she will not run again until this time next year when we hope to have another open day. The Hetty Snow is quite special because of the extent of access you will get to the engine. As you can see from the photos attached she is not encumber by a profusion of gardrails and safety fencing. Hetty fills most of the building, with only narrow walk ways to her sides, and when she is running I can assure you the experience is vicerally exciting and a little terrifying to see such a bulk of machinary in action at close quarters. You may even be lucky enough to drive the engine yourself as the first Winder did in 1875!
