STEVE PRESCOTT BRIDGE FORMAL UNVEILING OF THE ARTWORK Tuesday 27th May @ 11.30am Steve Prescott Bridge (St. Helens Chamber Side) Family and friends of the late rugby legend Steve Prescott are to attend a special unveiling of a footpath plaque in his memory. The celebratory plate is currently being lain on the floor and there will also be roadside signage in the shape of his shirt number 1 around the bridge which links the town centre to Langtree Park - home of the Saints. The original bridge designs were presented to the Prescott family by the Leader of the Council, Councillor Grunewald at the recent naming of the bridge after Steve. Councillor Grunwald said: Steve was a first class ambassador not only for rugby but for the town. As well as being a legend of the game he is also honoured for his tireless fundraising for his Steve Prescott Foundation. Naming the bridge after him and the placement of the plaque is our tribute to one of the greats of St. Helens. Its a well-deserved honour and a fitting one - with the bridge linking Steves beloved town and club. Former Super League international Steve, who battled a rare form of abdomen cancer, died at the end of last year aged 39. He played for St Helens, Hull, Wakefield, England and Ireland but was diagnosed with pseudomyxoma peritonei in 2006. The full-back was given only months to live but battled the disease and in 2009 was awarded an MBE. He also raised thousands of pounds for charity through the Steve Prescott Foundation. He retired through injury in 2004, after spending a year out of the game with a broken kneecap, and following his diagnosis set up the Foundation in 2007, which has to date raised more than half a million pounds. Photocall: You are cordially invited to the plaque unveiling which will take place on the St. Helens Chamber side of the bridge on the Linkway, St. Helens at 11.30am, Tuesday, May 27.
