STILL LIFE WITH IRIS Co-directors David Schneider and Ellen Massey introduce you to a fantasy written by award-winning playwright, Steven Dietz. Still Life with Iris is the story of a young girl, played by Clara Francis and Maddison Welvaert, who lives in the land of Nocturno where each night the denizens are hard at work creating all the things the rest of the world sees during the day. The people of Nocturno have their memories tied to the beautiful “past” coats they wear. If the Nocturnians tear their coats or lose a button, they lose part of their memory. The people of Nocturno are ruled by the Great Goods, played by Nina Bryant and Jeron Tucker, who live across the water on Great Island. The Great Goods possess the very best “one” of everything in the world. When they decide that Iris is the very best little girl in the world, her coat is taken from her and she is whisked away to Great Island. Without her coat, Iris has no memory of her past; but she does have in her possession a single button from her coat. Every time she holds the button in her hands, in her mind’s eye she sees a “still life” of her home in Nocturno. With the help of her two new-found friends, an 11-year old music composer named Mozart (yes, that Mozart), played by Chas Francis and David Chairez, and (with a nod to Edgar Allen Poe) a rhyme-speaking maiden of the sea named Annabel Lee, played by Olivia Ybarra and Lauren Hartwick; Iris embarks on a journey to find her memory and, ultimately, her way back home. With an exceptional cast of 22 (including 15 youth), colorful costumes, unique set pieces and props (which were designed and built by members of the community), creative scene changes, beautiful transitional music (after all, Mozart IS a character in this play), this production is food for the eyes, the ears, and the soul. Still Life with Iris is an enchanted play (think Dorothy Gale meets Alice) that will be enjoyed by young and not-so-young alike. You will smile; you will laugh; you will be charmed; and you may even cry a tear or two. Stephen Fleming, Tammy Francis, Robyn Gammill, Esther Henk, Stewart McGregor, Alice Gammill-Beck, Natalie Grimm, Lucy McGregor, Kathryn Peterson, Jesikah Tucker, Jonathan Tucker, Mallory Welvaert, Mason Welvaert and Bevra Williams round out the exceptional cast. Don’t miss this wonderful show. Still Life with Iris plays June 14th – 29th, Friday and Saturday nights at 8:00; with two 2:00 matinees on Sunday, June 23rd, and Saturday, June 29th; and two Sneak Peeks on Thursday, June 13th and Thursday, June 20th at the Gaslight-Baker Theatre.
