STOLEN. GO AHEAD AND SHARE!!!!! What to do when you harvest your elk. Before it gets stolen. Take lots of pictures. Harvest the cape, keep the antlers with you and ivories and DO NOT PUT them with the meat!!! Make sure to talk to the locals of where you plan to store your elk meat. There will be a proxy to sign....so investigate it carefully with each state! Idaho clearly states at the top of the game cooler proxy that it is for a cooler only. Idaho Fish and Game has full control....if it says anything else.....it gives that person legal rights to that meat....we signed the right one.....but be aware.....There are no regualtions for butchering of game meat in Idaho therefore if you sign the wrong proxy, you have signed away your rights. Read and carefully study each state you plan to hunt in as each state has its own proxy statement and laws but are fairly similar. Do NOT sign any other type of proxy. Get a receipt of receival of that game from that person. Make sure they are a state approved cooler. Since we live in Idaho...an Idaho fish and game approved licensed cooler. Once you make a business transaction...everything should be done in writing and on paper and you need to get back likewise for your records. Make sure every piece of meat you hang is tagged with your name and documented on your records and theirs. Write down your intentions on their documentations such as that they are just storing it and what your plans are. Take a picture of the cooler and anything if you do not get a receipt; write down information such as other peoples meat and tags. If you get back to the cooler...e prepared with a camera and just take pictures. You never know the intent of others. At some point we may all be where my son is.....having his game meat stolen from the cooler......what did we do wrong.....not listen to his gut instinct that these people were going to be dishonest. God gave us that for a reason. Listen to it. Listen to your children when they say mom....I think they are going to steal my meat. So while there are absolutely wonderful and beautiful people in Elk City Idaho. We always learn that out of bad also comes good. I am still blessed with a beautiful day with my son. And what they can never steal is the memories! We made beautiful friends and developed bonds that cannot be broken. It still truly was a great day.
