STOP CHILDREN WHAT’S THAT SOUND Stephen Stills was inspired to write “For What It’s Worth” shortly after Buffalo Springfield started playing as the house band at the Whisky a Go Go on the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. Annoyed residents and business owners in the district wanted a strict 10:00 p.m. curfew to reduce the traffic congestion resulting from crowds of young club patrons. Saying it was an infringement on their civil rights, a demonstration started on November 12th, 1966. 1,000 protestors, including Jack Nicholson and Peter Fonda, were handcuffed by police, arrested, and taken to jail. Despite popular belief, it was not a Kent State protest song. The Kent State event didn’t happen until 1970.
