STOP PATRONIZING OUR CHILDREN It is both saddening and frustrating to read an article written just for the sake of writing or to kill time. Worst when the writing was written out of prejudice, ignorance or to cause unnecessary uproars. Today I came across an article questioning our teachers and students in MRSM Langkawi for holding an event to show their solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza whom were under attack by Israel. The writer ridiculed our students for their appearance which resemble those resistant fighters in Palestine (mistook by the writer to resemble radical elements or militants) while at the same time questioned our teachers ability to make decision for allowing such action to take place. Im sure we all know too well that looks can be deceiving. In this case, pictures were slyly taken out of context to befool us. We are all aware of the encroachment of the element of extremism not only in our society but in societies all around the world. We are also shocked when our PDRM revealed that there are more than 100 Malaysian now fighting in Syria and Iraq as ISIS members. But to extrapolate, oversimplify and relate all of these with an innocent school event showing solidarity with Palestine (as reported by the news site, Shehab News Agency) is both damning and derogatory. It is wrong to belittle the intelligence of both our teachers and students from an elite school like MRSM Langkawi by writing all these nonsense relating their mere appearance with extremism which we know can never found refuge in our schools let alone an elite school like MRSM. If this is written just to tighten our grip on our schools and our brightest children from elite school, we should ignore such a call which only serve to patronize our children and disrespect their ability to think critically and independently. We should all fight against and stop this paranoia from paralyzing our young and brightest minds. I am fully confident that our teachers and students from MRSM Langkawi were fully aware of their actions and have not the slightest intention to engender extremism. They should not feel discouraged by this overzealous writing and should continue to hold awareness campaign and educate themselves on world issues such as Palestine like they already did. Well done MRSM Langkawi! [kj]
