Do you really think that theres a room full of 25-year-old guys who are sitting in a room with headphones on in front of monitors watching you while you brush your teeth in the evening? The app needs your permission to use your camera and the microphone because Messenger allows you to send voice/video and photos to your contacts using the app. It asks your permission once when you first install it, then it wont ever ask again, as outlined in the terms of service, like all the other apps that use your camera. So when you do want to attach a video or photo, you wont have to continuously give the app permission to access your camera and microphone. Which, ok, you can argue that it gives Facebook the right to access the microphone/camera even if youre not currently using it to take a photo/video of yourself, which is fair, but I have two questions. 1) Do you REALLY think they are accessing YOUR camera without you knowing? Why would they ever need to do that? Youre pretty unimportant to them, Im afraid! and 2) So does pretty much every other app you have on your phone that needs to use the camera or microphone (like, instagram, Twitter, Vine, even LinkedIn). If youre THAT concerned over the privacy level on your phone, youd better just buy a plain old PHONE that doesnt have a camera or the ability to install apps.
