STORIES FROM OUR COMMUNITY, DAY 11: 1st photo (Oct. 14): Contributor - Ginger Morton (ow.ly/CXdxP) “October is Spina Bifida Awareness Month. Ashleigh wrote this about Alex. #AsecondforSB #AwarenessMonth “my brother is one of the strongest people I know. when he was born he was born with spina bifida. he has had many challenges along the way but after almost 19 years he’s always found a way to do things & overcome challenges. I love my brother with all my heart & I wouldn’t trade him for the world. he’s taught me to live everyday without complaints bc there’s many things he can’t do that I can. live life without complaints.’” 2nd photo (Oct. 2): Contributor - Sara Watts (ow.ly/CXdN5) “Do you have #asecondforSB? Plz RT to show how loved and joyful these children are! #Embracethebif! @SpinaBifidaAssn” 3rd photo (Oct 14): Contributor – Ashley Wise Kuerzi (ow.ly/CYLLo) This is my amazing 5year old, Cawood. He is such an outgoing and loving boy. Cawood has a love for sports and playing outdoors. When he was younger I dreaded the day my husband and I would have to tell him he couldnt play sports. It broke my heart to think he wouldnt be able to do fun activities like playing sports with his friends. Thats why I was thrilled when we found out about Challenger Baseball. Every Sunday Cawood gets to spend his afternoons playing baseball with other kids with disabilities. His favorite friend is a little girl named Brailey who also has spina bifida. It warms my heart to watch my son swinging a bat, throwing a ball, and wheeling around the bases. Things I never thought he would ever get to do. I hope other parents with the same fears I had can hear this story and have faith that anything is possible! One message I want to spread during spina bifida month is that with love and support these amazing children are capable of doing amazing things. 4th photo (Oct 14): Contributor – Lauren Burdett (ow.ly/CYMeJ) #AsecondforSB This is what Spinal Bifida looks like! I have dedicated my life to educating the world around us about spinal bifida. I am a 28 year old woman with a L4 level SB. I moved to Cleveland Ohio three years ago away from my family and friends, all that I know to pursue a masters in social work at case western reserve university! I currently live here with my boy friend and cats! In May I graduated and am now a Social Worker! In June I attended the National Conference where I presented on transitioning! My career goal is to eventually do life coaching with individuals and families of those with spina bifida and educate the world around us to make the world a more accessible place for all people with disabilities specifically individuals with spina bifida! 5th photo (Oct 17): Contributor - Alicia Lauryn McDaniel (ow.ly/CYMC1) Do you have #ASecondforSB , this is Chasyn, one of the 166,000 living with Spina Bifida! He is my Hero!!! #facesofspinabifida #spinabifida Spina Bifida” 6th photo (Oct 4): Contributor – Brianne Sanderson (ow.ly/CYMRL) My little Leigha has been battling spina bifida her whole life but that wont stop her from dancing.
