STORM ACTIVITY IN SOMERVILLE AND TYABB LAST NIGHT A storm hit the peninsula yesterday (7 January, 2015) afternoon and evening affecting the townships of Tyabb and Somerville. Damage has been reported to around 60 buildings. More than 200 homes remain without power. There are a number of trees down, and a number of roads have been impacted. A ‘drop in centre’ will be established by the Shire from 12 noon, Thursday January 8 2015 at the Somerville Recreation Centre (14 Edward Street) for residents to seek some relief, have access to information, gain access to power etc. Jones Road is currently closed by the Police between Bungower and Mornington-Tyabb Roads. Residents of Jones Road can access their homes via the Police Traffic Management Points on Jones Road. Check traffic.vicroads.vic.gov.au/ for up-to-date information. Substantial damage has also occurred to the roof of the Somerville Mechanics Institute Hall; the hall has been secured and is closed until further notice. SES and Shire crews responded to a number of calls of trees down, traffic hazards, building damage and flooding. The Shire’s Municipal Building Surveyor is inspecting properties that have sustained damage. Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Bev Colomb said the Shire is currently assisting with the recovery from the storm, and thanks the emergency services for their response. “As clean-up efforts continue, and we ask residents to avoid any areas where storm damage is evident and take notice of road closures in the area. “Residents should take caution in these conditions, and remain aware of any severe weather forecasts,” she said.
