STORM TRACKERS TEAM ALERT The Storm Trackers Team has issued… UPDATE * A Waterspout Watch is in effect for the nearshore and open waters of Lake Ontario from Irondequoit Bay to Oswego in our alert monitoring area until 10 PM. PRIMARY THREAT... Waterspouts DISCUSSION: A cold front dropping south out of Canada will bring a strong push of cold air across Lake Ontario. Combined with the warm waters, waterspouts are possible after this frontal passage. Timing is everything with this cold front and it may be after dark before the cold air flows in. Boaters should be ready for changing conditions and avoid passing near waterspouts. SEVERE WEATHER WATCHES: Waterspouts are mainly a concern for boating interest. However, occasionally a waterspout will come onshore briefly before dissipating. Waterspouts form when cold, unstable air flows over a large body of water such as Lake Ontario. If you will be boating during the outlined time frame mentioned above, you should remain alert to the formation of waterspouts. Stay clear of them, as they can quickly capsize your vessel. If you see a waterspout, please report it to us immediately if you are at a safe distance. If safe to do so, try and get pictures or a brief video and send it along.
