STRANGE AS IT SEEMS: Peyton Place is a 1956 novel by Grace Metalious. It sold 60,000 copies within the first ten days of its release and remained on the New York Times best seller list for 59 weeks. It was adapted as both a 1957 film and a 1964–69 television series. The fictional Peyton Place is a composite of several American small towns: But I feel they could have written the entire story from the hidden activity that has occurred in the Pickwick area over the years and the stories that have been passed down to me voluntarily.... There has truly been a composite of activity where ugliness rears its head, and where the people have tried to hide all the skeletons in their closets. Maybe your town is just as guilty, but I cant help but be reminded of Peyton Place every time I hear one of these adventurous stories about our town that looks so peaceful and harmless.
