STRANGE HAPPENINGS -- Got this press release this afternoon from Sen. Jim Dabakis. It will be curious to see if either the D-News or Standard-Examiner touch the issue. The ongoing decline of all newspapers and a shift from pursing the 5Ws and an H in local media and turning from reporting local news to simply doing police blotter and courts should alarm everyone. PRESS RELEASE When: Saturday, May 31st Time: 1:00-1:59PM Where: Downtown County Building (West Side) - 451 S. State St Co-hosted by: Pulitzer finalist cartoonist Pat Bagley With the U.S. Department of Justice now investigating the legality of the back room shady deal between the New York Hedge Fund that owns the Salt Lake Tribune and Clark Gilberts Deseret News, the people of Utah will be holding a rally this Saturday to express their displeasure for the impending demise of the Salt Lake Tribune. In addition to over 15,000 petition signers, the SaveTheTribune group hopes to use the rally as further evidence to the DOJ that there is a broad level of community support for the Tribune. The unconfirmed rumor going around is that the Deseret News is feeling the heat and that it would not veto Jon Huntsman Sr.--if he decided to buy the Tribune. The trouble is, Jon Huntsman Sr. is not saying anything. We love Mr. Huntsman and he has the reputation as a truth teller and frankly, a bit of a billionaire rabble-rouser. However, this is just a rumor. If the Trib is for sale, the details ought to be made public. The D News should not decide who will own their competitor and the sale ought to be open. There are at least three fully qualified Utah people who have expressed an interest in the Tribune. The Tribune tramples the Deseret News in both advertising revenue and in circulation. In most every measurable way, the Tribune is by far the healthier newspaper. In a marketplace of ideas--the Deseret News loses. Yet, due to a multi million dollar payoff by the Deseret News to the Hedge Fund, the Tribunes ability to survive as a viable newspaper is now very questionable. Imagine a morning when only the Deseret News is avaliable to the people of Utah. Two voices are much stronger then one.
