STRAWBERRIES: Back in the States, Im usually disappointed by strawberries. Like most of the tomatoes on the market, American strawberries are watery and flavorless. Being my first winter back in Korea in fourteen years, I just discovered how sweet and bright Korean strawberries are! Or that winter is the strawberry season. Heres some info suggesting Korean grow a distinct variety of strawberry. If true, I dont know why these arent grown in the states (although it might be because American strawberries are grown in warm climates). freshplaza/article/90328/South-Korea-Strawberries-sweeter-in-winter On the other hand, American corn is MUCH sweeter than Korean corn. Korean corn is not sweet and rather mealy (but much more nutritious). Its probably the variety used to make corn meal and animal feed in America. SUPERSWEET corn, which now outsells all other kinds of corn, was derived from spontaneous mutations that were selected for their high sugar content. In 1959, a geneticist named John Laughnan was studying a handful of mutant kernels and popped a few into his mouth. He was startled by their intense sweetness. Lab tests showed that they were up to 10 times sweeter than ordinary sweet corn... Within one generation, the new extra sugary varieties eclipsed old-fashioned sweet corn in the marketplace... The sweetest varieties approach 40 percent sugar... However, supersweet corn sacrifices a lot of nutrition for that ten-fold increase in sweetness. nytimes/2013/05/26/opinion/sunday/breeding-the-nutrition-out-of-our-food.html I wonder if its the same with Korean strawberries.
