STRESSED high school students are turning to medication to cope with their workload, a state inquiry has been told as experts warn senior pupils face unprecedented pressure. Year 11 and 12 students are increasingly taking anti-anxiety and antidepressant medication to handle continuous written assignments, according to one clinical psychologist. Teachers and parents have told a Queensland Parliament inquiry into senior mathematics, chemistry and physics assessment that some students are being damaged by an emphasis on wordy essays and condemn how the subjects are taught and graded. Others support the assessment regime. Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek said his Government had established the inquiry following concerns around senior myths and science assessment, including student workload, and would respond to findings accordingly.
