STRIKING junior doctors who downed tools two weeks ago have appealed to President Robert Mugabe to intervene and break the deadlock as senior doctors announced they were also joining the job action. The move by the senior doctors, who have found themselves overwhelmed with work due the strike by their juniors, will further cripple the country’s struggling health delivery system. Patients were being turned away from most major government hospitals such as Parirenyatwa Hospital and Harare Central Hospital. At United Bulawayo Hospitals, middle level doctors filling in for the striking junior doctors said they would only deal with the most serious cases. The junior doctors embarked on an indefinite job stay-away on October 27 to press for better pay and working conditions. The doctors want their salaries improved from the current $300 to at least $1,200 a month. They also want their housing allowance increased from the current $250 a month. At least 400 doctors across the country downed tools last month crippling the health delivery system. Strikes by junior doctors over poor pay and working conditions are common in Zimbabwe which is going through a severe economic crisis-source-New Zimbabwe African leaders seek five star health care overseas.
