STROMAN AND MARPLE LEAD WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TO 83-71 WIN AT SAINT ROSE Albany, N.Y. – Graduate student guard Kayla Stroman (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy/Niagara) and junior guard Alex Marple (Elmira Lady Exprerss/Wellsboro) each recorded career-highs in scoring to lead the Le Moyne College womens basketball team to an 83-71 win over The College of Saint Rose on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium. With the victory, the Dolphins claim one-half point in the year-long Upstate Challenge between the two institutions. The other one-half point will be awarded to the winner of the February 15 meeting in Syracuse. Through 10 contests, the Golden Knights lead 5.5 to 3.5. Stroman finished the contest with 26 points, 14 of which came in the first half, as she hit 8-of-10 from the field, including 5-of-7 from behind the three-point line. Her previous career-high of 24 came at Niagara on February 19, 2012 against Marist College. Marple registered 22 points, her third game of at least 21 points in five games this season, while adding career-highs of six rebounds and a game-best six assists. Her previous high of 21 points was set against Roberts Wesleyan (11/9) and equaled against Mansfield (11/16). In Le Moynes three Saturday games this season, Marple is averaging 21.3 points per game (6.5 in two mid-week games). Junior forward Emily Greer (Corry, Pa./Corry) and sophomore forward Maggie Brown (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) each scored 10 points, while Greer pulled in a team-high nine rebounds. Junior forward Bath-Sheba McMahon (Queens, N.Y./Grambling Laboratory (La.)/Weatherford College) came off the bench in the second half to score seven points, grab three rebounds and block a shot in 11 minutes of action. Desiree Simmons led the Golden Knights in the loss with a double-double of 26 points and 11 rebounds, nine of which came on the offensive end, while adding three assists and three steals. Mariah Lesure registered 23 points, nine rebounds (four offensive), three assists and three blocks. Gabie Polce was the third Saint Rose player in double-digits with 10 points, while Sarah Illingworth led all players in the game with 16 rebounds, including 12 (eight offensive) in the second half, while scoring nine points. After Marple hit a three-pointer in the right corner to give the Dolphins an 8-4 lead at the 17:08 mark of the first half, the Golden Knights responded with a 16-3 run over the next 4:56 to take their largest lead of the game. Simmons had 10 of the points, Lesure made a pair of baskets and Polce started the streak with a lay-up. Following a pair of free throws by Simmons that made the score 22-13 with 11:27 remaining, Le Moyne rattled off 16 of the next 18 points, including 12 straight at the end, over a span of 7:17 for a 29-24 advantage. Stroman had 11 points in the streak, including a jumper and a three-pointer to beat the shot clock. Saint Rose countered with a 10-4 run to take a 34-33 lead with 6.6 seconds left in the half, but Stroman moved the ball up the court and buried a three-pointer from the right wing as the half ended to give the Dolphins a 36-34 lead at the intermission. In Saint Roses run, Lesure had six points and Simmons and Illingworth each had two. The teams went back and forth over the opening three minutes and 45 seconds of the second half, resulting in the games seventh and final tie, 43-43. Lesure had seven points in the span for the Golden Knights, including a game-tying three-point play, while Marple tallied five points for the Dolphins, including a three-point play 18 seconds before Lesure had hers. The Dolphins, who have won four of their first five games for the first since the 2002-03 season, scored the next six points to take the lead for good. Brown started the push with a jumper and then Marple followed with a lay-up and two free throws with 15:16 left. The Golden Knights posted an 8-4 run to close within 53-51 with 13:42 remaining, but the Dolphins registered an 11-4 run over 3:13 to push their lead to nine (64-55). Simmons and Nicole Bini each had three points in Saint Roses run, while McMahon had all seven of her points in Le Moynes run.
