STRONG INTERNATIONAL ENTRY FOR THIS SUNDAY’S SEPTEMBER 28TH CBA AFRICA CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE The international standard of the CBA Africa Concours d’Elegance has been reinforced by 19 entries from outside Kenya for the 2014 event which will be held by the Alfa Romeo Owners Club on Sunday (September 28th) at the Nairobi Racecourse with the gates opening from 9.00 a.m. The list of competitors features a 1928 Graham Paige saloon car made in the United States in 1928 which has been entered by Herman Zapp and his family from Argentina. Their 86 year old car has been used for a leisurely round the world trip during the past 14 years. The Zapp family first heard about the Concours at an event in the United States and while touring South Africa, they were urged to by three motor clubs to participate in Kenya‘s classiest motor sport event. The Graham Paige will contest the class for pre-1940 cars which features two Ford Models As, a 1934 Alvis Firefly and a Bentley made in 1936. Graham Paige was an American car manufacturer founded by the Graham brothers in 1927. The cars earned a reputation for quality and initially the company withstood the onset of the depression. Later sales failed and the production of cars ceased in 1940. Chris Pasha, the CBA Group Head of Marketing, said, “We are delighted that the entry from Argentina and the other competitors from outside Kenya demonstrate the reputation and status of the CBA Africa Concours d’Elegance among the classic and vintage car and motorcycle enthusiasts around the world. Like the Concours, CBA strives to provide top quality banking products and services to give our clients time for more.” “Between viewing the judging of the gleaming and glistening cars and bikes contesting the Concours, visiting the motor trade stands and the Classic Sale, it is hoped that spectators will call at the CBA exhibit. This is flanked by our co-sponsors and is located near the motorcycle judging ring. The Brookside Kids Centre is in the same area.” In addition to supporting the classiest event on the Kenya Motor Sport calendar, CBA will help change lives in the Kenyan communities by supporting the Beyond Zero Campaign. To this end, we shall donate Kshs.50 for every ticket sold on the Concours day to the Beyond Zero Campaign, a truly noble charitable cause that aims at eliminating preventable maternal and infant deaths during childbirth. For the first time in several years two cars from Uganda will be at the Nairobi Racecourse for assessment by the Concours judges. The oldest of the cars from Uganda is the 1970 Volkswagen Beetle of Leslie Cavell who uses her classic vehicle VW to publicise conservation. Tom Magezi has rebuilt a 1974 Volkswagen Kombi which will contest the class for utility vehicles. The Vintage Motorcycle Club of South Africa team of three motorcycles has been sponsored by Jubilee Insurance and is expected to take home several top prices. The 1926 Douglas of Johannesburg based Piet Maas will provide stiff competition for Sati Jabbal’s 1925 DKW which was the overall motorcycle winner last year. Allan Heyns will be making a first appearance in the motorcycle judging ring at the Racecourse with a 1953 shaft drive Sunbeam. The team captain Steve Helm is pinning his hopes this year on his 1936 Norton JAP. 12 members of the Uganda Bikers Association (UBA) are riding massive street and trail bikes from Kampala to Nairobi. They will devote Saturday to cleaning their bikes for marking by the experienced judges who will be working in the motorcycle enclosure from 10:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. Michael Kibwika of the UBA will be competing with his 2004 Suzuki GSX in the class for street motorcycles over 1200 cc against a squadron of super bikes entered by the Nairobi based Cruzin Kings group. Their team leader Shiloh Fausnight is aiming for a class win on his 2005 Harley Davidson. The oldest bike in the class is the 1976 Harley Davidson of Cruzin Kings member Jude Thaddeus. An influx of young competitors and newcomers has been a great encouragement for the organisers of the CBA Africa Concours d’Elegance. The list for the competition motorcycle class is dominated by teenagers with Andre Antoine on a 2006 Kawasaki , Amy Wanday with her 1990 Honda and her brother Ted will be riding his 1993 Yamaha YZ between the motorcycle judging stations. 23 year old Duncan Mutahi has prepared his father’s 1972 Alfa Romeo Montreal to contest the up to 3,000 cc touring car class. This powerful V8 engined coupe will be up against the 1967 Alfa Romeo Sprint of Gayling May who has dominated the class for several years. Newcomer car entrants include Francis Kungu with a 1951 Riley and Victor Odhiambo’s 1992 Mercedes Benz E220. Victor is the Chairman of the newly formed Mercedes Club which has applied for registration. Dr. Philemon Chebon is member of the Club who will be in the event for the first time with his 1988 Mercedes 200.
