STRUGGLE MAKES US STRONGER The pace of Indian dentistry is changing its strides for the past few decades! There were very few colleges in this country in 1980’s. There existed only one govt. dental college in each state, while Karnataka was the only state which had numerous colleges. There were very few practitioners in those days. The internees used to work in the evening time in the clinics of senior practitioners. Each Govt dental college used to have 40 seats for the entire state. Internees used to get stipend and also used to work under teachers in their clinics. They get complete exposure before comes out from the college. With the just BDS degree, they could confidently start practice. Those doctors, who started practice prior to year 2000, comfortably settled in life. They bought house, car and fixed properties. Now the scenario has changed entirely. Right now, how much is a teaching staff member getting as salary? Are they getting anything closer to the income of software engineers? The engineers complete their course in 4 yrs. with fewer expenses, as we take 8 yrs. and spend our fortunes. Their initial salary starts from rs.25,000/. Our initial income after MDS, starts from 22,000/. Their get pay hike as soon as they get expertise within a few months. But our salary will hike after gaining experience over years. We need to spend minimum of 15-20 lakhs for the dental clinic with minimum infrastructure i.e., at least with 2-3 chairs. The monthly expenditure will be minimum rs.80,000 to 1,00,000 including EMIs, rent, salaries, electricity, materials, lab charges & other expenditure. Some State Dental Councils are asking dentists to strictly adhere to 1948 code of ethics, which prohibits dentists from distributing even pamphlets also. How does a new dentist get patients? With the present conditions, can any new practitioner be able to buy a two bed room flat with his earning in near future. People who chose to join in dentistry should dedicate themselves to this profession. Profession comes first than anything else. We need to struggle to reach our goal. We should be optimistic and should not lose heart! Keep abreast with acquiring latest developments! Only hard working, service minded and dedicated doctors will achieve their goals. Best of luck!
