STUDIES IN ROMANS Usually, it is accepted that no one is really qualified to preach the gospel unless he has studied and understood the twin epistles of Romans and Galatians at least eight times. Though I have often resorted to these two epistles, I do not know whether I can boast of doing the eight time requirements. however, I believe that I have an idea of the main thrust of these epistles. Galatians is the outline while Romans is the Sermon or Exposition. Again, in undertaking the study of the epistles, there are tricks you must learn. the first thing is to get the general overview. It is the big picture that gives the details their true meaning. without the big picture, contextual interpretation is thrown to the winds and errors are likely to happen. I also want to tell you that epistles are called OCCASIONAL DOCUMENTS. this means that they were occasioned by some prevailing circumstances at the time of their writing. therefore the interpreter must be like a detective listening to one side of a telephone conversation. He is to use what he is hearing from that one side and conjecture what is going on on the other side. now let us look at the Big picture. The epistle to the Romans seems to me to be in four divisions 1. The PROLOGUE To The Gospel 1: 1-17 2. The PRESENTATION Of The Gospel 1: 18 -8 3. The PREMISE of the Gospel ch. 9 - 11 4. The PRACTICE Of The Gospel ch. 12 - 16 THE PROLOGUE TO THE GOSPEL In this section of the epistle Paul seems to say something small about everything he will later expound. Thus we see that he had something to say: 1. Concerning Himself v1 2. Concerning the Gospel v2-6 3. Concerning the recipients v7, 8 4. Concerning his prayers v9,10 5. Concerning his ministry v11-17 Have a nice study and please let me have your feed backs on whether the post is helpful and what it helped you to discover in your study of this great epistle. Let me remind you that every major revival in the history of the Church has been as a result of the better understanding of the message of Romans. Happy reading!!!!
