STUDY METHODS READING your work only is not the best method for everyone - you need a proper method that suits your personal learning style and you have to find it. Ask yourself which methods suit you and gain maximum marks when you are tested? Do NOT learn like a parrot – UNDERSTAND the CONCEPT – put all the work, the notes, in other words – be able to describe the work – even if you have to talk to a plant, or a dog or a cow!!! Do you re-write your notes? Do you transfer them into an essay? Do you make mind maps (spider diagrams) of them? Do you select out the key words? Do you underline, or highlight? Reading for an hour may make you think you have studied but if its not working now, it definitely will not be working tomorrow or the next day, so you need a focussed method. Find your own specific learning style as soon as possible. Rewrite your notes over and over. Put your class notes and even work from your text book into your own words then put them back into scientific sentences. Go over the work again and again. Another thing is that you need a dedicated work area, a room, even the bathroom, and a cupboard, in a tree –somewhere. In a perfect world you need a plant that you need to take care of like a ritual, a window, lots of water and small snacks (not junk food, but apples, raw carrots – even those little Lion bars). But only have the snacks when you have worked for 45 mins and achieved something. Then you have a 5 min break to reward yourself. Switch off your phone, do not answer the knock on the door, ignore your best friends!!. Some people need music in the background – choose the right kind of music that doesn’t distract you but spurs you on. Lastly, some people make 24 hour time tables which include their sleeping, fun time, school time, so you can see how much time you have left to STUDY for those distinctions. Some people also make a weekly time table to plan their work and at the end of the week you can see what you have achieved (and what you have not done). Charles Darwin used to go to the nearby church in his village where there was always a candle alight in the porch. He could read for long lengths of time all his school work. Let us know what works best for you.
