SU Police, SGA, ‘Jukebox’ launch safe-driving campaign The Southern University Police Department kicked off its Bayou Classic/Holiday Traffic Enforcement Campaign Friday and will continue it through December 12. The SUPD is warning motorists who refuse to wear their seatbelts to “BEWEAR” because campus police, along with other agencies, are increasing enforcement of the state’s occupant protection laws. The campus police department is partnering with the Student Government Association to make awareness and prevention a part of the Bayou Classic/Holiday Traffic Enforcement Campaign. SGA President Nicholas Harris will lead all awareness activities for the student body. The Human Jukebox, under the direction of Director of Bands Nathan Haymer, will be participating in the awareness campaign as well. During the campaign, the SUPD will increase its visibility on campus and push a public awareness campaign aimed at saving lives by getting more people to wear their seat belts, reduce speeding, not drink and drive and not text while driving. A combination of high visibility enforcement, advertising and public awareness efforts will be displayed through December 12. The SUPD will be using radars to address speeding on campus throughout the campaign. “I am very pleased with the organization of this campaign,” said Interim Police Chief Joycelyn Johnson said. This will be the first campaign involving the SGA and the Human Jukebox in collaboration with the SUPD to promote highway safety for the Bayou Classic and the holiday season.
