SUCCESS STORY: JC aka Johnny Cash, born at SSFRE this early spring after his momma came to is as an owner surrender in desperate need of a new home (shes fine and also adopted). She looked ready to foal in some ways upon arrival but her bag wasnt big enough and she showed no signs. One night I noticed while watching the camera that she looked a little restless. She was not used to being in a stall so this wasnt necessarily something odd for her. I do often feel I have a sixth sense however and I sent somebody out to check her. Of course when they arrived she acted fine, she was not sweaty or in anyway in distress. They waited around about 30 minutes just to keep an eye on her as we also watch the camera. Shortly after they left and literally seconds after I closed my computer she mustve laid down and popped out baby JC. All of a sudden my phone rang and it was one of our friends who said I believe there is a foal in her stall. We all zoomed there quickly and found this cute little bundle of joy delivered all good on her own. He was still laying down and wet so when I say moments I mean moments between her giving birth and us arriving at the farm. Unfortunately we had noticed that this mama had what appeared to be an odd shaped teat. When she had her baby it did not change whereas normally they tend to get a little larger and longer so the babies can latch on better. Knowing there could be an issue I had grabbed a bottle of frozen colostrum from my freezer before I headed to the farm that night. Little did I know that was the best thing I couldve done because I did bottlefeed this boy for seven hours. Thankfully he ingested all the colostrum his body needed to score an ideal IgG test when the vet came the next day. In due time with me nursing the mare and her bag getting a little softer thankfully JC was able to latch on and nurse from there forward. It also helped that he got a better idea as time passed and was persistent! This not so little guy is now a very big guy and doing awesome and his wonderful home.
