SUMMARY OF KHUTBAH AT HILAL MOSQUE (4th Edition) Date: Yaomul Jumah, 20th Dhul-Hijjah, 1434 AH (Friday, 25th October, 2013 CE) We thank Almighty Allah, we praise Him, we adore Him. May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon the leader of mankind who was raised as mercy to the whole world. May Allah extend the peace and blessings to the prophets Household, the Companions and those who follow his footsteps till the Day of Judgment. Amin For about four weeks now, we have formed the habit of summarizing the Jumaat sermons delivered at the Central Mosque of Hilal (Crescent) Islam Center, Ilorin, Nigeria. This is aimed at benefitting the Muslim ummah with the quality of sermons being delivered on weekly basis by our various Imams. May Allah reward us all as we seek to abide by the lessons derivable from the sermons. Amin This weeks jumaat sermon was delivered by Engr. Yassar Remilekun, a highly respected Daiy in Ilorin. The Imam started by praising Allah Who sent down the rain from the Heavens with which He nourishes the earth and bring from it grains and fruits that are eatable for both mankind and animals on the land. He admonished himself and the entire Muslim ummah on the consciousness of Allah. The consciousness of Allah brings a servant close to Allah and takes him far away from His punishments. The Imam congratulated the Muslim ummah on the just concluded Eid el Adha and reminded us of the significant lessons derivable from the act of slaughtering animals during the festival. He mentioned the verse of the Quran which emphasized the fact that It is neither their meat nor their blood that reaches Allah, but it is piety from you that reaches Him (Q22:37). Allah subhanahu wataala taught us how to manage the slaughtered animals without allowing any of it to waste. Not even the skin of the Rams, Goats and Cows we slaughtered was to be wasted by any reason. It is even common in our contemporary environment to see some people making praying mats out the skin and hairs of the Rams. It is in the light of the above that the Imam called the attention of the entire Muslim ummah to the perennial problem of food wastage in our contemporary society. The Imam noted that many of social gatherings (like naming, wedding, etc) are characterized by food wastage. The hosts in a bid to entertain their guests often serve them excessively and the left over are thrown into dust bins after the events. This kind of practice is highly reprehensible in the shariah. Despite the fact that Allah, subhanahu wataala permit us to eat and drink lawful things, He strongly warn against extravagance and wasting of foods and drinks. We should always remember the poor people who cannot feed themselves adequately. Apart from the fact that wasting of money, food and drinks is highly immoral, it constitute an economic sabotage. The economic value of food wasted in our society on daily basis cannot be underestimated. For instance, research reports recently shows that about $1000 worth of food is wasted daily in the United Kingdom. If we are to conduct a research on our case in Nigeria by examining the rate of food wastage in our homes and at ocassions, would our own case not be worse than that of the UK? Therefore, we cannot continue to blame the government alone on the poor state of our economy, we should blame ourselves too and stop wasting foods that can be consumed by some other people in the society. Instead of allowing the foods to waste, the wellbeing of the society would improve if it is preserved for the consumption of the less privileged in the society. Indeed wasting of food is an act of ungratefulness towards the blessings of Allah. In Suratul Israi, Almighty Allah says the wasteful people are brothers of Shaitan. The Imam said and I quote: Worshippers of Allah, protect yourselves from hell fire and your family by teaching them to avoid food wastage in any form. Instead, enjoin them to share with others whatever food they have so as not to have leftover. Spread the lesson to your neighbours too and friends so that we can minimize food wastage in our community. In conclusion, let us remember that Allah commands justice, the doing of good, and liberality to kith and kin, and He forbids all shameful deeds, and injustice and rebellion: He instructs you, that ye may receive admonition. (Q16:90) Till we meet next week in sha Allah for another edition of the programme, I say Assalamu alaikum warahmatuLohi wabarakaatuh
