SUMMER 2014 - INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY AT NORTH IDAHO COLLEGE OUTDOOR PURSUITS NIC Outdoor Pursuits: Located on the shores of beautiful Lake Coeur d’ Alene, NIC Outdoor Pursuits exercises both mind and body through wilderness based, environmentally sound outdoor adventures. Our activities foster personal growth through self-awareness, teamwork, and risk taking. We provide a non-profit outdoor service with trips and rentals for all those in our community. Program Overview: The goal of our internship program is to develop outdoor professionals by immersing them in an intense, hands on outdoor programming experience. We are devoted to creating an environment through which our interns will grow professionally and personally. Intern Responsibilities: As an intern at NIC Outdoor Pursuits, your job will be to assist with every aspect of the program. The NIC Beach program will be a large part of this experience. The NIC Beach is an extension of Outdoor Pursuits that operates on the banks of Lake Coeur d Alene offering equipment rentals, sailing and kayaking clinics, and concessions to the campus and community. However, interns will be also be involved with other parts of the program including: mountaineering, whitewater rafting, rock climbing, mountain biking, kayaking, whitewater equipment rental, and community programs such as the Ironman Coeur dAlene Triathlon and Access Funds Adopt A Crag. A growing part of our program is the NIC Challenge Course. Interns will play a significant role in making this a successful asset for the college through planning, marketing, and implementation efforts. Intern Requirements: Interns must be pursuing a college degree that includes an internship within its curriculum. In order to insure a high level of academic and professional growth, the internship must be evaluated by the NIC Outdoor Pursuits staff and their home institution. The experience is designed, but not limited to those seeking degrees in outdoor recreation related fields of study. Interns from all over the world are encouraged to apply. Qualifying interns must: be pursuing a degree that includes an internship within its curriculum, possess excellent interpersonal skills, be at least 20 years of age, be able to work flexible, and often long hours, be able to lift and carry heavy objects weighing up to 75lbs, be a strong swimmer and possess a knowledge of water safety, hold a current CPR/First Aid certification, and have a valid driver’s license. Interns will be expected to arrive in Coeur d’ Alene by mid-May and stay through the month of August (exact dates will depend on individual academic requirements). Compensation: Experience: Interns will obtain a clear understanding of how a college outdoor program really works. Teaching: Interns will have the opportunity to teach outdoor skills clinics. These will be based on the interns skill levels and how they progress through instructor shadowing. Stipend: Interns will be paid a $1800 stipend. Students will need to bring enough money to live until their first paycheck arrives in the middle of June. Housing: Housing will be provided. The interns will share accommodations near the NIC campus. Fun: Coeur d Alene, Idaho is a premier location for outdoor recreation. With a multitude of hiking, biking, paddling, and climbing opportunities within 15 minutes of town, your days off are guaranteed to be filled with adventure!
