SUMMER BRIEFING SERIES A-2 FLIGHT JACKETS: TREASURED POSSESSION OF AVIATORS This Saturday August 2nd, The March Field Air Museum will present a one hour briefing by artist Jerri Bergen “Victory Girl.” The March Field Air Museum’s collection of A-2 jackets will be highlighted in the presentation. Flight jackets have long been a symbol of status, a record of accomplishments and a visible expression of pride in unit, crew and aircraft. The A-2 Flying Jacket has been a treasured possession of aviators since its introduction in 1931. Issued only after the successful completion of flight training the jackets were designed to protect flyers from the harsh cold and blasting wind of the open aircraft of the period. Treasured by the veterans, the A-2 was less popular with the Pentagon and Air Force commanders. The military officially discontinued issuing A-2 jackets before the end of World War 2 replacing them with a less flashy cloth substitute. Forever a symbol of the romance of aviation the Air Force acknowledged their morale value and began reissuing A-2 jackets in the 1980s a practice that continues to this day. Jerri Bergen is a professional artist who specializes in painting A-2 jackets and nose art. Her works have been collected by persons all over the world. The talk will begin at 1 pm in the museum’s Yeager Family Library. It is free with paying admission. This summer series is sponsored by Renaissance Village Moreno Valley.
