SUMMER PENNANT B1 - ROUND ONE RESULTS --- MOOROODUC vs. BAXTER Moorooduc went into the match as favourites, but it was revealed that they weren’t going to get everything their own way despite Irene Kozakiewicz and Mat Del Vecchio turning up the heat. Irene started off her Summer Pennant the way she finished last season – with a win. She knocked off Mark Rancik while Mat accounted for the incredibly consistent Glenda Gardner. Mick Wright kept his side in it, defeating Eric Weiskopf, but then Mat and Irene struck again; taking out Mark and Mick respectively. Glenda gave Baxter hope with a five set win over Eric, but then Mat returned the favour with Mick and Eric got revenge to win in five over Mark to wrap up the night. In the final match of the night, Glenda upset Irene in a battle of consistency as it went well past 10:30pm before she was claimed victor. TYABB vs. FLINDERS It was a disappointing night for Flinders who were forced to play with just one regular in Andrew Pleysier as Gary Walshe and Jos Mathot were unavailable at late notice. Dean Williams filled in but found the going tough as he was forced to start at no less than negative seven against his opponents. Kamran beat Andrew in straight sets but Andrew got revenge, accounting for the young Luka Filardo in a close three set battle. Andy Yeo came from two sets to one down to defeat Andrew to ensure Tyabb came away with a dominant 8-1 win to start the season. Dean did however give Kamran some trouble, going down in five sets but providing plenty of nervous moments for the experienced player. SAFETY BEACH vs. TOOTGAROOK Safety Beach and Tootgarook were trash talking before the night began with four of the players coming from B2 and well acquainted with each other’s abilities. Ben Knights showed that the B2 players weren’t going to roll over by their more experienced B1 opponents as he beat Darren Smales in the first match to start the night while Peter Williams made light work of former partner Sam Mulholland 11-6, 11-6, 11-5. Fill-in Nathan Castles replaced Eddie Reynolds and did a fine job, knocking off Matthew Coca before later also defeating Darren and Sam to record three victories. His win against Darren would have been the match of the night after Darren saved match point at 10-9 in the third with an edge; had it not been for the match that was about to take place. Peter knocked off Matt in an epic five setter while Ben had earlier accounted for Sam in four. In the final two matches of the night, Matt had finally won a rubber for his team, defeating Ben in a tough four sets, while Peter managed to defeat Darren in the final match as Tootgarook ran away with it eight rubbers to one. MATCH OF THE NIGHT: Matt Coca (Safety Beach) defeated by Peter Williams (Tootgarook) 11-8, 9-11, 9-11, 11-6, 11-13. While it may seem like a bit of bias from this editor, anyone who was watching agreed this match was one to reach for the popcorn. In a battle of wills that had more twists and turns than an Agatha Christie novel, Tootgarook’s Peter Williams finally achieved revenge on his kryptonite from last season who finished one win clear in the Leading Player stakes. While previously Safety Beach’s Matthew Coca had comfortably had Peters’ number, it was shown early that he wasn’t going to have it all his way. After completing the first set with an 11-8 win, it was Peter who managed to win in a couple of close ones, changing his entire game style to attack Matt constantly. Two sets to one down, Matt wasn’t quite finished just yet and won 11-6 to force a decider. He then went 6-2 up and subsequently 10-6 up with four match points and it seemingly in the bag again. Peter rallied to show he wasn’t going to roll over and despite a fifth match point against at 11-10, Williams won the last three points as a wild forehand went long to celebrate victory. It was only round one, but already the cracking matches have started. PLAYER OF THE NIGHT: Mat Del Vecchio (Moorooduc) 121 points won, 94 points lost Mat Del Vecchio might have come into the night as the great unknown given his obvious talent and huge potential, but by 10pm, it was revealed that this season could be a good one for the guy who has previously battled with consistency issues. There weren’t any consistency issues to be found tonight however, as he first took care of Glenda Gardner (albeit with two 13-11’s); then took out Mark Rancik, a man who had beaten him twice two seasons ago; and finally he managed to outlast the big fish in Mick Wright over a tough five sets to remain undefeated. Along with Mat, Peter Williams, Kamran Khalfay and Andy Yeo are the players to remain undefeated. Despite some late finishes and one-sided team results, the first night was a cracker in terms of individual singles and if you think that was good, come on down next week to see the top two sides face off in what will make for some fantastic table tennis.
