SUMMER SOLSTICE June 22, 2013 Our Quilt It’s truly amazing how women’s traditions begin. As part of the 1981 Summer Solstice, Debbie Riverbend designed and made a quilt that was reflective of Paliza Campground and Solstice participants. In dedicating the Quilt the artist signed off with a quote “To the Revolution”. It was a reflection of the feminist movement, the women’s movement and the women’s spirituality movement, “The Goddess Re-Emerging” There is historical significance because the quilt became a symbol of women’s freedom and women’s space. A cloth tradition that has traveled to, Berkeley, Boston, Santa Fe, South Africa, Albuquerque, Grants, and New York City. The Quilt is raffled at community events in May and June and at the festival. The winner of the Quilt becomes the standard bearer for the next year and the funds are given to a local nonprofit, choice of winner. This year’s Solstice will encompass the Circle, booths, food and dancing. For more information call Maria or Nyira at 505 316-0512. Please get back to us as soon as convenient so that we can begin ads on KUNM. Thank you for your consideration. Sincerely, Maria Bautista & Nyira Gitana
