SUNDAY, April 27 2 Easter 1 Peter 1:8. Even though you do not see him now, you believe in him. We are a society intent on the idea that seeing is believing. We hear people say so often, “I’ll believe it when I see it.” This plays out everyday: I ask my son if he has brushed his teeth— and then I ask him to show me. Did he clean his room? Let me check. A forecast of bad weather? I’m examining the radar. Another of today’s readings, in John, also perpetuates this notion that seeing is believing. Poor Thomas is forever known as doubting because he asks to see the mark of the nails on Jesus. The situation is so unlikely, so unbelievable, that Thomas wants to see the proof for himself. Frankly, that’s the same reason I double-check the bedroom. In his letter to the churches in Asia Minor, Peter praises the people who understand the adage in a new way. Faith does not rely on seeing to believe. Instead, Peter says, noble and wise are the people who believe and then see, who turn the saying upside down: I’ll see it when I believe.
