SUNDAY FUN FACT: We all know that the Labor Day holiday is meant as a tribute to the contributions and achievements of the American worker. It’s meant to honor the history of fighting for safe conditions, decent working hours and ethical regulations, as well as the workers themselves, for putting up with the grind of working, which takes them away from their home and family for so many hours each day. But we’ve found that not all jobs are necessarily drudgery... look at some of these interesting jobs we came across: Love animals? The China Giant Panda Protection and Research Center in China has Panda Caretakers, who feed, care for, and provide social interaction for abandoned or orphaned pandas. Along with an annual salary of $32,000, the job also offers free meals, transit and accommodations. You’d REALLY have to love animals for this one – Urine Farmer. Hunters, herders, farmers and gardeners all use various kinds of animal urine to attract or deter creatures or mask their own human odor in a natural way. All that urine has to be gathered and purified somehow, and that’s the job of the lucky Urine Farmer. And, yes… it is a profitable vocation – there is an approximate $44 million market for urine, just among deer hunters! Well, it might be an interesting job, but it sure stinks! So maybe you are not THAT much into animals, but would still like to help them. Pet Food Tasters make an average of $40,000 a year tasting pet food and checking to see if it tastes good, as well as checking that nutritional facts to see if it is actually healthy for your pets. By the way, did you know that it’s a law that all dog and cat food must be safe for human consumption as well? We want to know who insisted that law be passed… Golf Ball Divers make anywhere from $50,000 to $100,000 to retrieve golf balls hit into lakes and ponds. There is even a diving school in Normal, IL that offers a special course in golf ball diving! You might wonder why some of these divers make so much money…. Well, don’t forget that many golf courses are in places like Florida, where they have to search for balls while also dodging snapping turtles, water moccasins and alligators! Yep, guess you gotta have a lot of….. um… nerve… for this job! A safer water-related job is Water Slide Tester. First Choice Holidays Resorts pays $30,904 plus paid travel for a six-month contract to test out water slides at their resorts, making sure the slides are safe for their vacationing clientele. Nice job, but it has its ups & downs… If you have a hard time staying awake at your current job, maybe you’d like to try your hand at being a Luxury Bed Tester. Simon Horn Ltd reportedly paid a person $1,600 to sleep in top-of-the-line beds every day for one month and blog about the experience to provide the company with an objective perspective on the products, and with information on what it takes to achieve a good nights sleep. Want an equally CUSHY job, but don’t need that much sleep? Furniture testers give feedback about how comfortable different pieces of furniture are. They help manufacturers gain insight to what is comfortable, what material they should use, how high/low the seats should be, etc. Furniture testers make an average of $31,000 a year. Have you ever wished Willy Wonka’s factory was a real place? Well, you might be interested in becoming a Chocolate Taster! Most professional chocolate tasters can earn between $30,000 and $60,000 a year, with some senior executives with particularly experienced “brown tongues” earning as much as a six-figure salary! Godiva Chocolatiers’ tasters are trained to inspect chocolates for aesthetic appeal and smell, in addition to taste. They say the job requires you to use all your senses so you can fully understand the chocolates complexity. So now that someone is making the chocolate, how about a place to eat it? Because some moviegoers get a little too much into their movies, IMAX Screen Cleaners are needed to remove Rasinettes, Gummi bears, popcorn, soda and even spitballs off of movie screens. Using a cleaning head and winch, cleaners remove dust and more from screens for your viewing pleasure, making around $45,000 a year. Guess paying their salary is why you almost need a loan to pay for your snacks at the theater! If the Screen Cleaners have to resort to using paper towels, they can thank their colleagues, the Paper Towel Sniffers for doing their job. Paper towel companies employ paper towel sniffers to make sure that their product is odorless. No one wants to use a smelly paper towel, so these sniffers make anywhere from $19,000 to $52,000 a year with their sensitive noses to make sure that your paper towels will not offend. Hmm… if someone is not good at their job, do they have to throw in the towel??? What is your dream job? No matter what you do, this weekend we salute all workers everywhere – thank you for what you do, every day! ~ptfb team
