SUNDAY, June 22 2 Pentecost Matthew 10:34. Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. I’ve often wondered if Jesus means he intends to bring a sword between family members—or if that enmity is just a natural consequence of Jesus’ message. In other words, is Jesus trying to break families apart and bring strife to our lives, or is his message of radical hospitality and love for the enemy one that will cause us to argue? Or is he saying that our notion of peace is more along the lines of comfort and niceness? And the sword he brings is that of God’s justice and the message of the prophets to wake up? Though it is good news to see the world as it is rather than as we want it to be, we tend to see wake-up calls as violence against us. We see the wake-up call as a sword or as a call to arms rather than as a calm cup of tea with Jesus. What is it you need? Is it the peace our Jewish brothers and sisters call shalom? Or is it a resetting of the world in God’s image, raising up your fallen- ness and casting down your mightiness?
