SUNDAY MORNING REFLECTIONS: “The Lords Labor Day” I Corinthians 15:58 “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.” “All work is honorable work, if it is honest work.” There is some work that is not honorable work, drug running, prostitution, gambling, and in the business world, business that takes advantage of people by swindling them out of their hard earned money. These are but a few that we would say is not honest work. We in America have too many of these enterprises crippling our economy and strength. When we look at our history we see that our nation was built on hard work, and not by those who were looking for a hand out. In every part of industry men and women gave themselves to building a stronger nation. Labor Day was official set in 1884 as a day to recognize the rights of laborers for equitable pay and more humane work hours throughout the industrial world. The first Labor Days were rallies for an eight hour work day and to restrict employers from arbitrarily cutting employees pay, and forcing them to work for lower wages. There is a dignity in toil if it is honest labor. We have very little respect for the man who will not work. In II Thessalonians 3:10, we read, “This we command you, that if a man would not work, neither should he eat.” “Six days shalt thou labor,” is the command of the Lord. God said fallen man would be forced to work in the sweat of his brow. The biggest tragedy of today is that men are being taught to live off the hard labor of someone else – That the government or someone else will support them. It is perfectly all right for us to support those who cannot work, but charity is no substitute for hard work. We have created a welfare society where a big chunk of America is living off Uncle Sam, and it is pulling us down. I want to talk to you about laborers in the kingdom of God. This is a day of labor for the child of God. Jesus said to his disciples, “The harvest truly is plenteous, but the laborers are few.” Today is the Lords Labor Day, for the night cometh when no man can work. The Lords Labor Day is Strict Work. “.. Be ye STEADFAST, UNMOVEABLE, always ABOUNDING ...” Christian friend we must be strict in the service of the Lord. First Paul gives a command to these things, and it is found in “Be ye.” It is a command to be STEADFAST in the work of the Lord. It means to be seated and firmly situated, grounded in to the task at hand, namely our service to the Lord. How steadfast have you been in the service of the Lord? Secondly, UNMOVEABLE suggest, to not be moved from the place of labor to the Lord. It means to be persistent, motionless with a stick to it without wavering. Thirdly, ABOUNDING carries this meaning. Your work is overflowing, exceeding the boundaries of service and labor. Yes the guidelines for service are strict for the Kingdom of God. The Lords Labor Day is Superlative work. “.. In the work of the Lord ...” There is no greater work to which we can be called, or to which we can give ourselves than the Lords work. The Lord gives to each of us the opportunity to work with Him. “For we are laborers together with God.” (I Corinthians 3:9) Do you have a place of service in the Lords fields? Are you working for the Lord? Let us cooperate with God and put our hands to the plow and be active in the service of the Lord, and to His cause. Let us not become a statistic, and be placed on the shelf of inactivity. Give your best to your Saviour! The Lords Labor Day is Satisfying Work. “.. For as much as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.” Now we are told, “we know.” James the half-brother of Jesus said, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.” (James 1:17) We know the goodness of God through His Son Jesus Christ who gave Himself for us and purchased our souls with His own blood. Do you think God will be unthankful for your labor of love toward Him? Do you think your labor, ever how small is not recognized by Him? God is not an ingrate! His reward will be satisfying! Your work is not in vain. Amen? Amen! We’ll Work Till Jesus Comes (Mrs. Elizabeth Mills) O land of rest, for thee I sigh! When will the sum-mons come? When I shall lay my armor by and dwell in peace at home. We’ll Work .. till Jesus comes, We’ll work .. till Jesus comes; and we’ll be gathered home.
