SUNDAY, March 16 2 Lent Romans 4:13. For the promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. Thank God for the gift of the law! Through the law, the children of Israel were able to establish their community and build a common life. The law also helped individuals understand what their particular purpose was and was not. At the same time, the law could be used to exclude people. Members of the community could find themselves removed because of breaking the law. Laws intended to build community could also be used to break down the community. The law sometimes lost its connection to the reason why it was created: as an expression of love for the God of Abraham. We too make rules and laws for ourselves. We use our personal codes of conduct to help us live with our families in peace and make our way in a confusing world. We too can become so rigidly attached to following our personal rules that we forget why we chose to follow them in the first place. Our rules can become more important than relationships and love.
