SUNDAY, May 4 3 Easter Acts 2:40. Save yourselves from this corrupt generation. Peter’s exhortation to the followers of Jesus in this passage from Acts hits with the same hurricane force today as it did then. Was that generation any more corrupt than our own? Somehow I doubt it. Some of the ways and means of corruption may have changed with time, but the temptations and human impulses leading to it remain the same. We encounter corruption in our governments, our institutions, our businesses, our sports, our entertainment, and, yes—in our churches. Yet God calls us to live out our Christian values in this world every day. It’s the “every day” part that’s so hard. It’s one thing to profess our faith in a community of believers on Sunday. It’s something entirely different to pack up our faith and values and take them with us when we venture into the world for those other six days of each week. A visiting student challenged the students at our seminary with this question: “Where is the church Monday through Saturday?” Our students kept wrestling with that question long after she left.
