SUNDAY READ FOR ALL: Theres a trending issue of late that many kept saying being a violation of diplomatic protocol by our very president allowing his celebrity sister to meet H.E., Mexican Pres. Enrique Nieto, for and his behalf. It prompted me to look into it in the net and so far, this came out (as an excerpt): Two presidents entered the White House as bachelors. Grover Clevelands sister served as his First Lady for a short time, until he married Frances Folsom. James Buchanan, however, remained a bachelor his entire life. His niece, Harriet Lane, originally came to live with him in his home in Pennsylvania and acted as his hostess for years before he went to Washington. These women were First Ladies in the truest sense, as they served as their countrys hostess in much the same way as any presidential wife. Women like Harriet Lane and Angelica Van Buren were the main female presence in the presidents life, and it is impressive how these often very young women managed so elegantly. Their role as First Ladies has been immortalized in the Smithsonians First Lady exhibit, as well. Now, if that picture of the presidents sister is seemingly a violation of diplomatic protocol for you, I guess this tells you that it has already been violated historically in other countries many times over. In the U.S., even twice. Personally speaking, I find no violation there. As a Rotarian, we are highly conscientious of the diplomatic standards, from seating arrangements (for males or females guests), speaking engagements, announcements (spoken or written), dress codes, lapels and pinnings, sashes, awarding ceremonies, handshakes, bowing before male or female consorts, and many more. We are consulted not only by the international diplomatic corp, but even by the military.
