SUNNI AND SHIA Author: Mahatir Mohammad, Dr. Translation: Muhammad Tariq Khan Dr. Mahatir Mohammad (Ex Prime Minister Malaysia) touches the contegious issue, I translated it for the benefit of all Islamic history is filled with hostility between Sunni and Shiite Muslims . Often wars erupted between the two. This Friday we read in the newspapers and watched on TV with bomb blasts killing and injuring hundreds of followers of the both sects while they were in their Masajids and other places where they congregated for Friday prayers. Watching all these hostilities, suicide bombings and killings between Sunnis and Shiites, the enemies of Islam, Jews and their allies, are very happy . For them Sunni or Shia are all Muslims and their enemies. Their (Jews and Allies) aim is to weaken and destroy Islam & Muslims, and this is conveneintly being achieved by Muslims themselves. Animosity between Sunni and Shia has never been the case in Malaysia because almost all Muslims in this country are composed of Ahle Sunnah Wal Jama’a (Sunni), the followers of Imam Shafei . They all adhere to the same Islamic teachings (Fiqah or School of thought) and despite the political differences divding Muslims in Malaysia , it never comes to killing and fighting. Now the Shiite doctrine is being implanted in Malaysia too, and if the Shiite spreads here, of course Malaysian Muslims will be divided too (on sectarians lines). The difference between those who accept the teachings of Sunni and Shiite is a global one, each one holds separate masjids and there are many other differences. Sooner or later they will increase hostility until they are rioting, killing and fighting (in Malaysia too) as it happened in Iraq , Pakistan and Syria . The effect of this is on the National level (for Malaysia) will be unstability and insecurity. Muslims in this country will suffer a terrible plague . Those who are already weak will get weaker. Severe damage will be done as we withness in countries where Sunni and Shiite are waring each other. We (in Malaysia) hold and profess the religion of Islam without much trouble at present. We know in Iran and some other Muslim countries there is majority of Shiite Muslim and we do not wish to create problems for them by trying to develop an understanding with Sunnis living among them. Likewise we do not wish them to try to bring divisions to Malaysian society by supporting Shia-ism in Malaysia, we are peaceful as we belong to the same sect . “To you your religion , to us our religion” (Lakum deenu kum waliya deen ) is what Al Quran teaches accepting the co-existinace of believers and non-believers in a peaceful manner. There is no compulsion in Islam . They (Non-Beleivers) are free to disbelieve and those who beleive are also free to profess and practice the teachings of Islam . Brining divisions and hostility will destroy this peaceful place and the very fabric of this community.
