SUPER SATURDAY SUMMARY It was looking iffy there for a little while this morning. I arrived at the courts at about 8:55, just knowing that a couple of guys would be there wondering why the hell I wasn’t there already. No such luck. I was all by my lonesome for about ten minutes until Rick Rogers rolled up. He and I talked for a few minutes, hoping at least two more guys would show up. I told him I’d sent out a text to 10 guys, but all the responses I got back were in the negative. One’s in Beaufort, four just ‘can’t make it’ for unstated reasons, one is helping a friend move, yada yada yat. Steven Condee got there at about 9:20 and Zach Heath arrived a few minutes later and we had four, and by George, that’s all you need for doubles. Rick suggested that the two oldest Farts take on the younger Farts. They agreed, lol, and some mild junk was disseminated by Rick, indicating that we (The Elder Statesmen) were going to take the Young Bucks to school. The bell rang and The Elder Statesmen did indeed hold a short clinic, schooling the Young Bucks 6-1. We were up 4-0 before the YBs scratched into the win column. Rick was placing his serves like laser-guided missiles and we won the final two games for the victory. Steven and I teamed up against Rick and Zach for the second set. For a few minutes there, I was thinking they were going to blank us. They had us down 4-0 but we cut it to 4-2. They had us 5-2, but we tied it up 5-5. The tenth and final game went down to the wire with multiple deuce and both teams had ad, but Rick and Zach got the final two points and put us down 6-5. Jon Dixon and Yates Perry had arrived during that second set, warmed up, and were ready to rumble. Steven had to leave to go help out with his daughter’s fourth birthday and Zach politely deferred to the elder gentlemen to go ahead and play. Thanks Zach. Together again, Rick and I (The Elder Statesmen) took on Jon and Yates (The Newcomers, because I’m all out of good names) in the third set of the day. Continuing with our theme of extremes, The Newcomers busted out of the stall taking the first three games like they were taking candy from babies. I know I was crying, but it was because of how crappy I was playing at critical times. Rick managed to win his serve to get us in the win column and avoid the shirttail skunking we were on the verge of receiving. Glenn Privette, still on the DL with a hamstring injury, stopped by and had some comments about Rick’s serve and how it’s not much of a serve, but he sure does finagle a way to win just about every time he serves. So, in reality, it must be a pretty good damn serve. TES won the next two games to get it even at 3-3. TN took the next one to go up 4-3. We tied it again 4-4, but Jon and Yates won the next game to go up 5-4. Again, we fought back and tied it 5-5. Rick and I won the next two games to win the set 7-5 and complete a very unlikely comeback against two very good players. Although someone had to lose, we all had a good time playing doubles today. Rick and Yates had to go, and that left Jon and I with some time to burn, so we decided to play some singles. In retrospect, if I had it all to do over again, I would have rather climbed to the top of that ten-foot high chain link fence that surrounds the court and jumped off and landed on my face a couple of times. That’s about what it feels like to get dominated on the tennis court 6-1. Jon played very well in this singles set that lasted about twenty minutes, lol. He hit a ton of devastating shots that I just nodded at and said, “Great shot, Jon” because that’s what they were. His first serve was handcuffing me terribly bad and I didn’t have much of a chance at any point during the contest. I will, however, be looking to avenge this loss at the very next available opportunity. Jon, you have been warned.
